Mill District Condominium | Minneapolis, Minnesota
Guests and family are greeted at the front door of this newly designed condominium with a beautiful colorful sculpture and bold dark stained entry portal and door. Designed as a “recomposition” of an existing condominium in the Mill District of Minneapolis for a couple moving into the city from their suburban home. The Clients sought to create an expanded primary suite (including two closets and a new primary bathroom), with two flexible office spaces.
Within the space their design goal was to optimize natural light and the views of downtown to enhance family and guest entertaining. Also, the clients sought to develop display for their developing contemporary art collection. Translucent glass is introduced to pull light into the new primary bathroom and dressing rooms, complimenting the white display walls, white oak floor, exposed concrete columns and brick walls of the historic warehouse building. An existing mobile glass enclosure of the central guest bedroom now also functions to define a flexible office and sitting room. This flexible room can be private or open for lounging and entertaining for guests and family. The art and display cubes of the Living room wall exhibit vivid colors and organize small personal elements of their collection for a unifying statement.
The new primary suite is organized as a “Private Realm” that can be separated from the “Public Realm” of the entertainment and workspaces. This suite is entered through a portal that includes an art niche as a visual focal point from the “Public Realm”. Shoe storage is celebrated within aluminum and glass enclosed cases as part of the quality of the art collection. A new intimate office was created adjacent to the kitchen with views of downtown.
